چکیده

Novel enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of plant secondary metabolites have been discovered in our laboratory from both differentiated plants and in vitro cultures of Thai medicinal plants. The discovered enzymes included (1) geranylgeraniol-18-hydroxylase from Croton sublyratus containing plaunotol, an anti-peptic ulcer diterpenoid, (2) dopamine-secologanin condensing enzymes from Alangium lamarckii containing emetine, an amoebicidal tetrahydroisoquinoline monoterpene alkaloid, (3) lawsone-forming multienzyme complex from Impatiens balsamina root cultures containing lawsone, an antimicrobial naphthoquinone, and (4) 1,2-dehydroreticuline reductase from Papaver somniferum seedlings containing morphinan alkaloids. Each of these enzymes was isolated, partially purified, characterized and evaluated for its role involved in the biosynthetic pathway of each secondary metabolite accumulated in its producing plant.

A Comprehensive Overview on Valuable Tropane Alkaloids: Scopolamine, Atropine, and Hyoscyamine

Tropane alkaloids such as scopolamine (C17H21NO4), atropine (C17H23NO3) and hyoscyamine (C17H23NO3) are the most important plant secondary metabolites in the pharmaceutical industry due to anticholinergic activity, competition with muscarinic receptors and also treating different human diseases. Scopolamine, hyoscyamine and atropine are the most important tropane alkaloids used as anticoagulant...

Secondary Metabolite Contents and Antioxidant Enzyme Activities of Cichorium intybus Hairy Roots in Response to Zinc

Hairy root systems are formed by transforming plant tissues with the “natural genetic engineer” Agrobacterium rhizogenes. In most plants such as Cichorium intybus L., hairy root cultures have proven to be an efficient system for secondary metabolites production. The effect of Zinc (ZnSO4), a heavy metal, was investigated at different concentrations (0, 1, 5 and 10 mM) on some secondary metaboli...

Improvement of Growth and Stimulation of Biosynthesis Pathway of Polyphenols in Melissa officinalis L. Colonized by Arbuscular Mycorrhizal

The increasing demand for medicinal plants has amplified the importance of the development of effective methods for enhancing the cultivation of these plants. The association of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi with medicinal plants has been found to alter the level of secondary metabolites by affecting the plant metabolism. Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.), is an important medicinal plant ...

Transcriptome analysis of Polygonum minus reveals candidate genes involved in important secondary metabolic pathways of phenylpropanoids and flavonoids

BACKGROUND Polygonum minus is an herbal plant in the Polygonaceae family which is rich in ethnomedicinal plants. The chemical composition and characteristic pungent fragrance of Polygonum minus have been extensively studied due to its culinary and medicinal properties. There are only a few transcriptome sequences available for species from this important family of medicinal plants. The limited ...
